Seize the Multiscreen Opportunity
Online video and pay TV are coming together as consumers seek richer multimedia services. Armed with tablets, smartphones, smart TVs and other connected devices, today's consumers can access video content more easily and in more places than ever before. But consumers want to do more than just watch TV on different devices. They want true multiscreen services that can seamlessly deliver the same premium content, rich features and quality of experience (QoE) across every screen they use.
New screens, new viewing trends
In 2010, Alcatel-Lucent conducted extensive surveys to gauge consumer interest in multiscreen services featuring online video. The results showed that:
- 71 percent of all young consumers would use multiscreen services; 63 percent would remain loyal to service providers that offered these services
- 65 percent of youth would pay for multiscreen services, with triple-play bundles and subscription premiums the preferred methods of payment
- 50 percent of consumers in Western Europe are interested in multiscreen services; more than 25 percent claim strong interest. These numbers rise to 64 and 36 percent among smartphone users.
Recent market research confirms that consumers are embracing multiscreen services. In January 2011, Nielsen reported that U.S. consumers spent 45 percent more time watching video on PCs and laptops compared to the previous year. They streamed 28 percent more video and watched 31 percent more video streams. What's more, the number of mobile video users increased by 43 percent.1 In March 2011, Informa Telecoms & Media projected that over-the-top (OTT) video services would overtake IPTV in 2013 and reach a subscriber base of 380 million by 2015.2
