To differentiate themselves, communications service providers need to shift from network-centric to a service-centric approach for service delivery that meets end-user expectations of Quality of Experience (QoE) in today’s multimedia networks. However, the challenge is providing the right user experience at the right price.

Traditional methods of determining and managing Quality of Service (QoS) do not guarantee QoE for individual applications, sessions or users. The key is to not only measure QoE but to also have control mechanisms in place to respond to early warnings of QoE concerns. A new framework and tools to measure QoE are required. Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs has defined parameters for measuring QoE for newer services, showing how standard measurement data can be collected from various network elements and be processed to derive end-user QoE.

Significant progress has been made in measuring QoE, but as network technologies, devices and services evolve, so do user expectations for QoE. Alcatel-Lucent continues to work on new innovations to measure and enhance QoE and incorporate these improvements in the products and services you trust.
