Overview: The aim of Pésinet is to provide preventative health care
services for children in Mali from birth to age 5 from low-income households
thanks to remote diagnosis based on the tracking and monitoring of changes in
the children's weight. The goal is to help reduce child mortality and build
awareness of the necessity of a preventative approach to health care in Africa.
Alcatel-Lucent is a founding partner and demonstrates its commitment to
supporting projects that help achieve a more inclusive information society and
improve the living conditions of people in emerging countries through an
innovative use of Information and Communication Technologies.

Judges' Comment: "This project is an excellent example of
how a company can bring innovation to its CSR efforts and simultaneously create
business opportunities by linking a need in a specific community with its core
business. Through partnering with other organizations -companies, Academics,
civil society- involved in Pésinet, Alcatel-Lucent is contributing to the
health of children in developing countries. Innovative use of mobile
communications technology allows quick detection of children's illnesses
through transmission of data regarding the child's weight. Consequently, the
child can have access to medical examination and medications. The initiative
won an award from a French national paper for its innovative approach.
Besides the obvious benefits to the children, Pésinet also represents a new
business venture, which aims to be self sustaining in the long term, since
families pay a minimal fee for using the service. Efforts to scale up the
project with the help of more non-governmental organizations are being
undertaken. As such, more children will be able to benefit from this disease
detection and prevention project."
