Paris, October 30, 2007 — Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE:
ALU) rolled out its core optical transport solution in Italy for Interoute, the
UK-based pan-European operator. Extending the reach of Interoute’s existing
infrastructure, Alcatel-Lucent commissioned two new submarine links. One
connected the islands of Sardinia and Sicily to the Italian peninsula, a
distance of around 377 km, and the other connected Sardinia to Lazio, a
distance of more than 250 km. Alcatel-Lucent and Interoute also rolled out a
terrestrial link between the cities of Cagliari and Olbia in Sardinia.
The new terrestrial and submarine links enables Interoute to deliver business
and support the expansion of residential broadband services such as high-speed
Internet access to a wider range of users with increased efficiency and
reliability. The project also enhances the regional optical connectivity and
enable faster service provisioning. Interoute owns and operates a network
spanning more than 54,000 km of lit fiber and serving over 12,000
customers.
“Italy is a key crossroad between the Mediterranean Sea and the African
continent with fast growing requirements for increased capacity,” stated
Matthew Finnie, Chief Technology Officer of Interoute. “The features of the
Alcatel-Lucent solution address all of our sub-sea requirements today, while
providing the scalability that allow us to cost-effectively grow our network
according to evolving end-user demands.”
“Data traffic is re-shaping the transport requirements of operators like
Interoute who need to increase the flexibility and performance of their core
networks,” said Olivier Picard, President Europe and South at Alcatel-Lucent.
“Operating up to 60Gbit/s and offering industry-leading transmission spans, our
solution is designed to maximize the efficiency of long-haul transport to the
benefit of both operators and end-users.”
The solution is based on the multi-reach Alcatel-Lucent 1626 Light Manager
(LM), which is a versatile DWDM platform addressing regional to pan-continental
terrestrial and unrepeatered submarine applications. The product utilizes Raman
technology that improves transmission performances (reach and bandwidth) over
distances. This technology is also used to connect the two islands to the
peninsula without using submarine repeaters and is deployed in the terrestrial
link to compensate for the high loss of some long spans. As a result, Interoute
benefits from simpler network design and dramatically reduced transport
costs.
The existing Alcatel-Lucent 1350 management suite manages the new solution,
which adds to the equipment already installed, comprising the Alcatel-Lucent
1678 Metro Core Connect, data-aware Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) systems
and WDM solutions including the 1696 Metrospan.
