Paris, December 3, 2007 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Brasil Telecom, one of the biggest mobile and fixed operators in Brazil, has selected its IP/MPLS solution as the foundation for the first converged, nation-wide network in Brasil. The Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS solution will allow Brasil Telecom to offer both fixed and mobile residential broadband, as well as business VPN services from a single platform, resulting in improved operational simplicity, flexibility and lower costs. This multi-million Euro contract solidifies Alcatel-Lucent as the number one IP edge provider in Brazil for fixed carriers.

The Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS solution, which supports multiple service types with superior scale, hierarchical quality of service and high availability, will ensure Brasil Telecom meets stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for business critical services. The new network will carry IP and Ethernet-based VPNs for enterprise customers, and will be used to cost-efficiently aggregate Internet, video on demand and mobile backhaul traffic. The Alcatel-Lucent solution will also support triple play services allowing Brasil Telecom to offer the next wave of advanced services with minimal further investment and in line with customer demand.

“Brasil Telecom has a very large subscriber base therefore we need to deploy field-proven, scalable and highly reliable technology for our IP transformation” said Dante Nardelli, technical planning and technology director of Brasil Telecom. “Placing our complete services portfolio over a single, flexible Alcatel-Lucent infrastructure allows us to reduce network complexity and increase revenues by offering value added services to our customers.Alcatel-Lucent also gives us the foundation for triple play services in the future, which is important as we continue to evolve our network.”

“The Brazilian telecom market is enjoying a period of outstanding growth, led by mobile telephony and broadband, and Brasil Telecom now has the infrastructure in place to take advantage of this opportunity” said Cindy Christy, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Americas’ business. “This deal confirms our long-standing partnership with Brasil Telecom and reinforces Alcatel-Lucent’s position as a strong and competitive IP network provider for all fixed Brazilian carriers.”

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its industry-leading IP/MPLS portfolio in main cities across 14 states in Brazil. The Alcatel-Lucent solution consists of the 7750 Service Router, 7450 Ethernet Service Switch and 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM). Alcatel-Lucent also will provide a comprehensive suite of network integration services, including network optimization, system support and general project management, as well as assisted operation services, in nine States where Brasil Telecom operates, including the Federal District – the Brazilian capital.

Brasil Telecom joins more than 170 service providers in over 65 countries who have selected the Alcatel-Lucent IP portfolio. More than a dozen service providers in Latin America have selected the Alcatel-Lucent IP solution including Telefonica, Antel, Telsur, CANTV and Telemar.  According to Ovum-RHK, Alcatel-Lucent was #2 in the IP/MPLS Edge market segment in Q1 2007, with 20% market share.
