FOR RELEASE WEDNESDAY JUNE 24, 1998

MURRAY HILL, N.J. - School's out for most college students, but a dozen of the brightest will spend the summer preparing for graduate school while learning about technology from scientists and engineers at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies' research and development unit.

The twelve college students, all majoring in science, math and engineering, will also receive four-year doctoral fellowships, courtesy of Bell Labs Cooperative Research Fellowship Program (CRFP) for minorities and women, and the Graduate Research Program for Women (GRPW). Funded by the Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) Foundation, the programs are designed to provide encouragement and financial support to academically excellent candidates who have demonstrated high potential for obtaining a career in technology.

"For some of our participants, these fellowship programs could mean the difference between attending a university, with little or no financial worry, and having to focus on getting an education while working to make ends meet," said Selwyn Joseph, fellowship program manager for Lucent's university relations organization.

"Since 1972, Bell Labs has made it possible for some 200 female and underrepresented minority students to get financial and career support through these programs, which provide full-time summer employment, education and living expenses. Participants also have access to a built-in network of their peers, and experts at Bell Labs, which is well known for its collaborative work-style, " Joseph said.

"One of the key elements in the ongoing success of the CRFP and GRPW fellowships is the individualized mentoring. Each student is assigned a mentor in his or her field of study, who provides career and technical advice even after the program is completed. Year after year, students tell us that the valuable guidance and support they get from the scientists make these fellowships truly unique," said Michael Garey, director of mathematical sciences research at Bell Labs and committee chair for GRPW.

Fellowship winners for the CRFP are: Tanisha Hall (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) of Takoma Park, Md.; Shandra Harper (Norfolk State University) of Franklin, Va.; Ayana Holloway (Princeton University) of Raleigh, N.C.; Jerri-Ann King (MIT) of Bloomfield, Conn.; Charles Shelton (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) of Philadelphia; and Tamara Williams (Tennessee State University) of Belleville, Ill.

Participants pursuing graduate studies through the GRPW include: Susan Dacy (MIT) of Hudson, Fla.; Michelle Povinelli (MIT) of Westlake, Ohio; Rebecca Schuller (Cornell) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; Yayoi Takamura (Stanford) of Charlotte, N.C.; and Alice Wang (MIT) of Melville, N.Y. Jill Nickerson, of Frankfort, Ill., who has already accepted a fellowship from the National Science Foundation, is pursuing her graduate studies at Harvard and will receive a GRPW grant for work in computer science.

Program participants receive college tuition, an annual living stipend of $17,000, a book allowance, university fees, related travel expenses and relevant summer employment at Bell Labs. A grant of $2,000 is given annually to GRPW awardees who have accepted a full scholarship from another institution.

Each student is selected based upon academic GRE scores, class rank, scholastic aptitude and letters of recommendation.

Information and applications on the CRFP and GRPW programs can be obtained by writing to:
