Stuttgart, Germany and Metering Europe, Barcelona, Spain, October 7,
2009 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has signed an
agreement with the German municipal utility Stadtwerke Pasewalk GmbH to
implement smart meter operation services. The solution will help the municipal
utility address the multiple challenges that are imposed on utilities
throughout Europe to both respond to economic pressure from stakeholders and
regulators for greater asset efficiency as well as reducing their environmental
impact.
Alcatel-Lucent end-to-end approach will enable Stadtwerke Pasewalk to ensure
that it is in accordance with the upcoming European Union’s rules which will
require consumption-dependent billing of gas, electricity and water as of the
1st of January 2010. It will also give Stadtwerke Pasewalk customers an
instrument with which they can monitor their own energy consumption in real
time and optimize it accordingly.
Alcatel-Lucent service package benefits from the know-how of its partners:
Vodafone Germany, DIEHL Energy Solutions and SIV AG with its 100% subsidiary
UTIPS GmbH, a provider of integrated solutions and services for the energy
sector. Alcatel-Lucent will operate the central meter data management system to
monitor and control the smart meters and integrate the individual systems.
Vodafone Germany will provide machine-to-machine communication solutions, while
DIEHL Energy Solutions will deliver the smart meter and systems solutions plus
attached services. The SIV AG is providing their ERP system kVASy®, which is
used for billing by the Stadtwerke Pasewalk as well as for services of UTIPS
GmbH, and which will be linked to the Alcatel-Lucent components.
“By choosing the end-to-end service package offered by Alcatel-Lucent, we’re
in an excellent position to respond to upcoming developments and can look ahead
confidently. We will be able to rely on it even if the Regulatory Authority
decides to require flexible rates when using smart metering. Alcatel-Lucent has
a wealth of experience in implementing and running complex information
technology and communications systems from its many successful projects,” noted
Horst Ebelt, Managing Director, Stadtwerke Pasewalk.
The municipal utility company selected the Alcatel-Lucent service package in
order to remain flexible in its choice of meter technology, including the
associated concentrators – the interface between the meters and the IT system.
The solution includes the Alcatel-Lucent 8617 SMM software application which
supports multiple protocols as thus, by being technically agnostic, enables the
deployment of a wide range of hardware products.
“This contract will enable Stadtwerke Pasewalk to offer smart metering
services as soon as the new legislation takes effect without needing to invest
in developing a platform of their own,” explained Alf Henryk Wulf, Head of
Alcatel-Lucent’s business in Germany.
