Your mobile subscribers are adopting 3G services, but the traditional 2G
subscriber base keeps growing too. You need to expand both network layers for
more capacity and coverage to improve both the quality of service and
availability. And with the introduction of Long Term Evolution (LTE), you must
further develop your networks and rationalize your investments to deliver
profitable services. You need to grow your capacity today and re-allocate
resources based on subscriber demand tomorrow.
The Converged Radio Access Network (RAN) domain within a High Leverage
Network™ (HLN) architecture provides a common IP-based wireless RAN that
delivers increased bandwidth at lower overall cost. It has all the building
blocks to evolve or renovate the network: converged base station, Software
Defined Radio (SDR), converged controller, converged mobility features,
converged transport and converged management center. Converged RAN is the key
to a smooth and cost-efficient network evolution. To sum up, a Converged RAN is
the HLN wireless anchor point.

Converged base station: Versatility by leveraging the installed
base
To enable a smoother transition for operators, Alcatel-Lucent has, since
1999, focused its development efforts on a multi-standard approach — currently
achieved by the Alcatel-Lucent Multi-standard Base Station (MBS). The MBS
integrates GSM/EDGE, W-CDMA/HSPA+ and LTE modules, or CDMA and LTE modules,
within a single rack, and is managed by the Alcatel-Lucent converged management
system.
Thanks to reduced equipment requirements, limited installation services,
rationalized power consumption and optimized maintenance service, an
Alcatel-Lucent 2G/3G site can provide you with 40 percent savings in total cost
of ownership (TCO) compared with the deployment of a macro solution.
By January 2010, we had shipped 700,000 MBS units.
Software flexibility with SDR modules
Our Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology makes it possible to use
your network management center to remotely allocate the modulation of your
choice in the radio modules. Whether GSM, W-CDMA, or LTE, your network
reconfiguration will not require costly on-site intervention and you will enjoy
the flexibility of reshuffling your network layers at will to adjust your
resources according to your customers’ behaviors. You may also optimize your
revenue by choosing to favor high-end services such as HSPA+ or
LTE.
Whether you are looking for plug-in modules or remote radio heads (RRHs)
supporting all the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) features,
Alcatel-Lucent RF modules will allow you to fully exploit your current and
future licenses with coverage of a wide range of frequencies: 700 MHz, 850MHz,
900 MHz, AWS, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz, 2100 MHz and 2600 MHz.

At CTIA 2009 Alcatel-Lucent was awarded four of the 2009 Emerging
Technology Awards, including one for the best “Network Infrastructure – Wide
Area Network” solution.
The Alcatel-Lucent converged base station is part of the Converged RAN
portfolio based on SDR technology. This technology allows operators to smoothly
evolve their Alcatel-Lucent CDMA installed base to LTE with maximum reuse of
existing equipment.

The converged controller
The first step in the Alcatel-Lucent converged controller strategy comprises
a shared cabinet and power for the GSM Base Station Controller and the W-CDMA
Radio Network Controller to achieve network simplification and TCO savings. In
the second step, Alcatel-Lucent will propose a common ATCA platform ready to
integrate in
addition the LTE mobility management entity (MME).
Converged mobility features
Common management of 2G, 3G and 4G resources increases your overall
capacity. Alcatel-Lucent intelligent mobility features, such as Intelligent
Multi-carrier Traffic Allocation, unified Radio Resource Management, and
evolved High Rate Packet Data (eHRPD), ensure traffic is intelligently
distributed across 2G, 3G and 4G carriers, and at the same time prevents
inter-layer handovers toward already congested cells. Your multilayer network
capacity is automatically optimized when you activate these features and your
handover performance is greatly improved.

Converged transport
To meet the growing demand for mobile broadband services and to maximize
profitability, your mobile transport networks must evolve to deliver increased
bandwidth at a lower cost, while providing reliability and a consistent quality
of experience. The Alcatel-Lucent Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture
(META) provides an end-to-end architecture that allows profitable migration
and scalability of your network. This architecture offers 2G, 3G and 4G
services aggregation from the access network to the core network; it handles
any type of transport protocol: IP, ATM, Hybrid (E1 over DSL). At the radio
access level, the Alcatel-Lucent Converged Base Transceiver Station integrates
some true IP features for seamless network integration.
The eXtended Management System (XMS) is the Alcatel-Lucent answer for
enabling best operating practices for mobile networks. The solution offers
continuity and integration with the existing deployed network management to
simplify network management in the context of multi-technology networks.
The XMS contains powerful tools to ease your global network operations with
an end-to-end strategy: radio network planning, provisioning system, network
performance optimizer, RF optimizer, wireless quality analyzer, stability data
analyzer, IP backhauling, and the Alcatel-Lucent 9900 Wireless Network Guardian
for deep packet inspection and traffic monitoring.
Those tools are combined with our Extended Self Organizing/Self Optimizing
(xSON) strategy, which relies on an end-to-end suite of innovative
multi-technology tools and solutions (2G, 3G, LTE) to maintain outstanding
network quality in an automated or assisted manner.
As a result, our converged management strategy simplifies network operations
while improving network performance and reliability — which can lead to a
significant reduction of your OPEX.
